Looking good? It’s all in the jeans.Dress them up, dress them down. It’s easy to turn to jeans as a trusty fall-back option when the pile of strewn, tried-on outfits by the mirror reaches a certain height. But this summer, denim – in a thrilling variety of forms – is a staple look. Yves Saint Laurent’s recent death served up a reminder on its timeless fashionability. The revered designer famously said: “I wish I had invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes.” …and all we hope to offer under the Whiteleys’ roof. We have heard a lot about this season’s hot new denim shape – the wide leg, high waisted jeans – but our fashion stores also conjure denim ruffled skirts, hotpants, strapless dresses, dungarees, classic jackets, waistcoats and jeans galore (skinny, wide, regular, frayed, deep-dye and colour wash). In H&M you can find soft, sun-bleached denim jackets, funky shorts and wide jeans in sumptuously soft organic cotton. There is a stage in early summer when every woman gets the urge to find something pretty and colourful in her wardrobe. Go with that feeling! Use the denim element as a canvas on which to paint a feminine “park romantic” look Add a straw hat, or a sheer scarf, wooden bangles or ballet pumps. Alternatively, fling a denim jacket over a delicate dress and fling on some long beads or a waist belt to achieve the Kate’n’Sienna at Glastonbury look. High-waisted jeans are taut and sexy at Karen Millen, where they come in classic blue denim or sleek white. Wear with contrasting pieces, such as a wide-striped top or classic zip-front bomber, for a sporty urban feel. When every schleb in LA has been snapped in groovy hotpants, why not imitate the look with KM’s flatteringly cut tiny denim shorts? French Connection gives denim a romantic edge with soft frill-front shirts, flirtatious dresses, sun-bleached jackets and dungarees with detachable braces. It also boasts the ubiquitous wide-leg, high-waist cut as well as the super skinny and stunning coloured denim in scarlet, leaf green and royal blue. The very word ‘denim’ has most of walking into Gap on autopilot. It is their bread-and-butter business, of course, but this summer denim comes with lashings of extras. The denim range itself comes in varying shapes from buttoned-through coatdresses to zipped-through jumpsuits that taper at the ankle. Jeans of all sorts can be feminised with gorgeous layers in a pale palette… girlish embroidery… throw-on tunic tops. The glory of Gap’s range is that is also a celebration of the denim-dye colour, ‘indigo’. If blue is your colour - from deep inky blues to cobalt to softer tones - Gap shopping is your game. |
