Do you remember the first time you watched a DVD?  Well, the digital experience isn’t confined to your TV anymore.  Its bigger, better and waiting for you to be blown away here at ODEON Whiteleys with perfect sound and images of a breathtaking depth and quality.

Digital cinema has also enabled the next revolution in the film experience – 3D. No more clunky (and embarrassing) bi-coloured paper spectacles.  The new 3D experience – RealD – involves just a pair of what look like sunglasses.  The left and right lenses are polarised at slightly different angles to give the differentiation essential to turn 2D images into something that will make you want to duck as it leaps out at you!

We’ve already seen two roaring successes this year with Hannah Montana and U23D and hope to bring to you all the advantages of this technology – films, concerts and even sports coverage!

Up and coming titles like Journey to the Centre Of the Earth, starring Brendan Fraser and released July 2008, will show the all new possibilities of this medium, as well as being a thoroughly exciting title in its own right.

Watch out for the ODEON digital logo next to listings or ask a member of our team for details.

NEW RELEASES

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Release Date: 22nd May 2008

Mutt: ‘You’re a… teacher?!’
Indy: ‘…Part-time’
indianajones.jpgThis production is surrounded by a veil of absolute secrecy but here's what we know so far and what we've guessed…

It’s now 12 years on. Indy is enjoying a quiet life teaching when (we think) his old flame Marian Ravenwood from Raiders of the Lost Arc turns up with (we think) a son in tow.  His name's Mutt - which could be a play on Indy's name that we know comes from the Jones’ family dog.  Could Mutt be Indy's son?  WE DON'T KNOW!

The only other snippets of info we have sniffed out are: Indy will be battling commies this time round, not Nazis.  He’ll be helped (or possibly hindered, we don’t know) by an old friend Mac, played by Ray Winstone; and John Hurt, who may or may not be playing Abner Ravenwood, Indy’s mentor and Marian’s father who was thought to have died before the first film.

Somehow a crystal skull enters the mix, how and to what purpose is a closely guarded secret – but you can see a real Crystal Skull in the British Museum - claimed to be of Aztec origin.  No one can say for sure who made them: an advanced Mayan civilisation unknown to us, mysterious higher powers, 19th century European jewellers or even aliens!  Claims have been made of the Skull’s healing powers and the most famous skull, the Mitchell-Hedges skull was supposed to have brought DOOM to any who touched it.

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas hope to recreate the freshness & excitement of the previous films – and a part of that experience will be us not knowing what to expect, but we just can’t help wondering… So we at ODEON Whiteleys would like to invite you to write in with your own ideas of what Indy 4 will be about – the writers of the best, closest and funniest plot lines will be invited to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as our own personal guests for free, and quite apart from what really happens in the film we may have a few surprises for the winners in store too…

Please clearly mark as ‘INDY COMPETITION” and address all entries to:
Marketing Dept
ODEON Whiteleys
Queensway
London W2 4YL
Or hand in your entry at our Box Office
Competition ends 22nd May 2008

Sex and the City.
Release Date: 30th May 2008

‘Big: ‘Shall we get you a big diamond?
Carrie: ‘No, just get me a really big closet’

sex and the cityCarrie Bradshaw continues to narrate the story of her and her friends’ obsession with love, sex and fashion in New York City. We join them 4 years on from the end of the hit TV series, and as we’ve seen from the trailer – Carrie may well be getting carried away with her wedding to Mr Big, Charlotte’s long awaited pregnancy and various shenanigans of an illicit nature from Miranda and Samantha.

We’re all big fans of both the TV series and of course, all things fabulous.  So to celebrate the opening of this film we’d like to offer our guests the chance to relax in our atrium bar, which will be packed with more than a few surprises for the opening night. As the film exults in friendship so do we – to the extent that any group of friends buying 4 or more tickets together can enjoy free drinks whilst looking fabulous above the masses on our balcony - and we’ll have luscious cocktails at prices any gal can afford.

Our Pick of the Month

Iron Man.
Release Date: 2nd May 2008

‘Heroes aren’t made…They’re built’
IRON MAN (2008)

ironman.jpgAs the newly formed Marvel studios first major release, everyone here is hugely excited about the up-and-coming Iron Man film for two reasons; Iron Man is awesome – there’s no other suitable word for this tooled up man of metal, and Robert Downey Jr is quite possibly the coolest man on the planet.

In this adaptation from the classic Marvel comic, Robert Downey Jr plays the billionaire industrialist and genius weapon designer Tony Stark.  A playboy with no care for the consequences of his inventions is kidnapped whilst on a press junket in Afghanistan and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead he secretly builds a high-tech suit of armour and blasts his way out of captivity.  Having learnt a few lessons from being on the receiving end of his own arms trading and on learning of a nefarious plot with global implications he dons his powerful armour and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.

This character fascinates many comic fans.  His is one of the more mature creations to have emerged from the genre and like other fan favourites, such as Batman, he has both human flaws and a dark side.  You may have noticed in the trailer that Stark enjoys the odd whiskey – this is a reference to the battle with alcoholism explored in the graphic novels.  Plus his trademark white glowing disc in the centre of his chest is actually a magnet drawing away a shard of shrapnel embedded in his chest from piercing his heart.

Speed Racer.
Release date: 9th May 2008

speed-racer.jpgDo you remember the Japanese anime Speed Racer? This iconic series known as Mach 5 Go! Go! Go! in Japan has been adapted for this live action film from the Wachowski brothers, the same team that brought The Matrix trilogy and V for Vendetta to the big screen.

Emile Hirsch plays Speed and as his name might suggest, this hero likes to drive fast, really fast.  Like recent hits such as 300, Speed Racer has been shot entirely against greenscreen.

Allowing the Wachowski’s to create a day-glow riot of colour, kitsch and excitement for Speed and the Racer family’s world.  The aim being to get as close to the anime experience as possible.

Speed’s goal is to win The Crucible, a cross-country rally that took the life of his elder brother Rex Racer.  He faces stiff opposition from the best racers in the world, including the mysterious Racer X and the evil Chairman of Royalton Industries who tries to drag Speed into a lucrative corporate deal which Speed refuses, choosing to stay loyal to his family’s racing business and himself.  The sort of film that you just have to see on the big screen, we predict Speed Racer will  be this Spring’s perfect family film.

Nim’s Island.
Release Date: 2nd May 2008

nims-island.jpgAnything can happen on Nim’s Island, a magical place ruled by a young girl’s imagination.  It’s an existence much like that of her hero, Alex Rover – a literary character written as the world’s greatest hero by Alexandra Rover, played by Jodie Foster.

Unlike her creation, Alexandra can’t even leave her apartment, while Nim glories in the idyllic life of the island.  Until Nim’s father go missing and a twist of fate brings her and Nim together.

Made Of Honour.
Release date: 2nd May 2008

madeofhonor.jpgStarring Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monahan as two singles who have enjoyed an platonic friendship for 10 years.  He’s a serial dater while she wants to marry but just hasn’t found Mr Right yet.  Just as Tom (Dempsey) comes round to the idea of a long term relationship and possibly marriage, Claire (Monahan) gets engaged.  Of course this makes Tom realise what a fool he’s been and when she asks Tom to be her maid of honour he reluctantly agrees just so he can stop her marrying the wrong man and woo her himself.

What Happens In Vegas.
Release Date: 9th May 2008

what-happens-in-vegas.jpgWhat happens in Vegas - stays in Vegas.  Unless you get drunk and wake up the next morning married to a complete stranger!

Luckily it’s not much harder to get a divorce – with the exception of this pair, well on their way to never seeing each other again, until one wins a huge jackpot on the slots with the other’s quarter.  Sentenced to 6 months ‘Hard marriage’ by the judge, will they bag the money for themselves or realise how lucky they are?

Doomsday.
Release date: 9th May 2008

doomsday.jpgDoomsday is the new all-British sci-fi horror brought to us by director Neil Marshall, the man behind The Descent and Dog Soldiers.  Inspired by classics of the genre such as Mad Max and Escape from New York, Doomsday takes place in a post-apocalyptic Britain ravaged by a terrifying plague called the Reaper Virus.  Everyone in Scotland is long been presumed dead and Hadrian’s Wall has been rebuilt to quarantine the whole country.  Rhona Mitra stars as the heroine who leads a team to seek survivors and hopefully find a cure in the inhospitable north when the virus emerges in the presumed safe haven of England.

We highly recommend you check out Neil Marshall’s other films, especially The Descent - which features some of the best ever roles seen for women in the horror genre.
